Progressive Library Organizations Update, 2013-2017
This article is a five-year update to the author’s book, Progressive Library Organizations: A Worldwide History, published by McFarland in 2015. It includes information on all the organizations covered in the book except the Library and Information Workers Organisation of South Africa which folded in 2000. These six organizations are from Austria, Germany, Sweden, UK, and US. The analysis is based on several new interviews in 2017, documents, publications, correspondence, and much personal experience. These organizations are in various states of health, and two of them have transformed into new structures. We can take heart that activist librarians continue to organize themselves to push back against the neoliberalism that pervades our profession and the world at-large

Less Minimal Flavour Violation
We consider the approximate U(2)^3 flavour symmetry exhibited by the quark
sector of the Standard Model and all its possible breaking terms appearing in
the quark Yukawa couplings. Taking an Effective Field Theory point of view, we
determine the current bounds on these parameters, assumed to control the
breaking of flavour in a generic extension of the Standard Model at a reference
scale Lambda. In particular, a significant bound from epsilon'/epsilon is
derived, which is relevant to Minimal Flavour Violation as well. In the
up-quark sector, the recently observed CP violation in D -> pi+ pi-, K+ K-
decays might be accounted for in this generic framework, consistently with any
other constraint.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figur
Bis(2,6-diamino-3,5-dibromopyridinium) hexabromidostannate(IV)
The asymmetric unit of the title compound, (C5H6Br2N3)2[SnBr6], contains one cation and one half-anion in which the Sn atom is located on a crystallographic centre of inversion and is in a quasi-octahedral geometry. The crystal structure is assembled via hydrogen-bonding interactions of two kinds, N(pyridine/amine)—H⋯Br—Sn, along with C—Br⋯Br—Sn interactions [3.4925 (19) Å]. The cations are involved in π–π stacking, which adds an extra supramolecularity as it presents a strong case of offset-face-to-face motifs [centroid–centroid distance = 3.577 (3) Å]. The intermolecular hydrogen bonds, short Br⋯Br interactions and π–π stacking result in the formation of a three-dimensional supramolecular architecture
The transverse breathing mode of an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate
We study experimentally the transverse monopole mode of an elongated rubidium
condensate. Due to the scaling invariance of the non-linear Schr\"odinger
(Gross-Pitaevski) equation, the oscillation is monochromatic and sinusoidal at
short times, even under strong excitation. For ultra-low temperatures, the
quality factor can exceed 2000, where and
are the mode angular frequency and damping rate. This value is much
larger than any previously reported for other eigenmodes of a condensate. We
also present the temperature variation of and .Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR
Bis(2-bromopyridinium) hexabromidostannate(IV)
The asymmetric unit of the title compound, (C5H5BrN)2[SnBr6], contains one cation and one half-anion. The [SnBr6]2− anion is located on an inversion center and forms a quasi-regular octahedral arrangement. The crystal structure consists of two-dimensional supramolecular layers assembled via hydrogen-bonding interactions of N—H⋯Br—Sn [D⋯A = 3.375 (13)–3.562 (13) Å and D—H⋯A = 127–142°, along with C—Br⋯Br synthons [3.667 (2) and 3.778 (3) Å]. These layers are parallel to the bc plane and built up from anions interacting extensively with the six surrounding cations

Dynamics of a classical gas including dissipative and mean field effects
By means of a scaling ansatz, we investigate an approximated solution of the
Boltzmann-Vlasov equation for a classical gas. Within this framework, we derive
the frequencies and the damping of the collective oscillations of a
harmonically trapped gas and we investigate its expansion after release of the
trap. The method is well suited to studying the collisional effects taking
place in the system and in particular to discussing the crossover between the
hydrodynamic and the collisionless regimes. An explicit link between the
relaxation times relevant for the damping of the collective oscillations and
for the expansion is established.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
